I get really excited when I see one of these signs!
My heart starts beating rapidly! I get all fidgety! I check my purse for all the needed things, money (cash & credit), my phone with google app (to identify items & their value) and spare bags to put everything in!
I’m simultaneously asking my husband to take the quickest route available! I need to get there now! Forget about being late, I want to be there an hour early if possible!
Inevitably when we arrive my heart sinks because there’s already 15 people (even more desperate) in line ahead of me!! Of course, I’ve got really excellent taste so they’re obviously going to get all the good stuff I wanted first!
So, I moan, “I’m late!”
I stand in the back of the line jealous of everyone who’s ahead of me. I’m slapping mosquitoes off of my legs and thinking, ”I should definitely add bug spray to my necessities.”
For 20 minutes we all wait together, we’re antsy but polite to each other. We all know though when that magic announcement is made, “we’re open!” The race is on! It’s every man (or woman) for himself (herself)!
So when the door is officially opened there’s a mad rush inside and outside, people scatter left and right! They come in pairs, with a plan, one heads towards household items and the other is off to the garden and garage area.
I’ve already resigned the good things are gone but this is where my persistence and willingness to dig and go where no one has dared to go before, comes in handy. Occasionally, I’ll find the unnoticed item in the corner or I’ll dig in a box out of sight under a table. Eureka!!! I’ve discovered treasure! Somehow, no one else knew it was treasure, not even the ones in charge! It’s an irresistible bargain! I proudly tuck it into my bag and guard it with my life! I promise to protect it and give it a new loving home!
In this case, at this sale, I looked up!
I couldn’t believe my eyes! $2.00! For an almost 90 year old embroidered piece of handiwork. Signed and dated in perfect little stitches!
It gets even better friends because when I took it off the wall and looked behind it there was an old black and white photograph, of I’m guessing Lava and Peg! I make up my own story of who the 3rd person is.
There’s even the original label from where they had the embroidery framed, in Odessa Texas.
Treasure and a bit of history!
By the way, does anyone know Lava and Peg? I’d love to learn more of their story!
